Description
The Jordan Councill Memorial Cemetery is divided into two sections: the "white" cemetery and the "African American" cemetery. As a part of their community activism, the JHA has made several attempts to get the cemetery listed as a historical landmark in order to protect the few remaining headstones in the African American cemetery, as well as highlight the injustice the cemetery represents, historically. As a part of this process, the JHA has advocated for a protective fence for the African American cemetery grounds as students and residents have continued to vandalize and destroy the grave sites since its creation in the late 1800s.
