Junaluska: New Archaeology

Since 2021, faculty and students from the Department of Anthropology at Appalachian State University have partnered with the Junaluska Heritage Association to expand their historical investigations into the deeper and unwritten past using archaeology.

To date, we have completed two seasons of archaeological survey and excavation in the neighborhood as part of the undergraduate course Field Archaeology.

In 2021, we worked in “the Mountain” portion of the neighborhood, with the goal of locating traces of some of the community’s late 19th and early 20th-century farmsteads.

In 2022, we shifted our focus to “the Hill,” specifically to the site of the Chocolate Bar at 215 N. Depot Street, the community’s social club in the 1940s and 1950s.
